Book Your Oliver! Audition

Oliver Twist is a classic tale written by Charles Dickens in the late 1830’s.  It is a powerful story that directly reflects the chaotic times in which Dickens lived. The musical Oliver! has been performed for decades by theatre groups both professional and amateur and is one of the most popular musicals ever written. Why do people come back to this show time and time again? We believe it’s because the music is memorable and haunting, the characters are funny, complex, and compelling, and the story is one that remains relevant in our ever-changing world.

The decision to showcase Oliver! as our spring 2018 production was not one that was taken lightly. Its thematic tones range from very dark to very light.  We know that Oliver! is commonly misconstrued as a children’s musical.  In fact, it would be more accurately described as an adult show that has children in it.  At its core, the musical shows us a boy who struggles to survive against all odds.  Oliver fights to retain his innocence as he comes face to face with menacing characters and immeasurable obstacles.  The musical also tackles many other complicated subjects including society and class, the criminal underworld, and domestic abuse. Most importantly, Oliver! is a story about survival, about good winning over bad and about how love and family can be found in the most unexpected places.
